Did
you know that:
The
annual death toll from synthetic prescription drugs, both from the correctly
prescribed and the incorrectly prescribed, amounts to about 231,000 deaths
every year ???
(To put this into perspective, this
is the equivalent of a world trade center disaster every week for over a year
and a half, or the crash of two fully loaded 747 aircrafts every day of the
year).
Did
you know that:
the
US has the most expensive health care in the world ???
(In
fact, the US spends more on health care than the next 10 biggest spenders
combined:
Japan, Germany, France, China, the U.K., Italy, Canada, Brazil, Spain and
Australia).
Did
you know that:
If
the US health care system were a country, it would be the 6th largest economy
on the entire planet. Despite that, the US ranks last in health and mortality when compared with 17 other developed nations ???
Did
you know that:
anywhere
between 40 and 78 percent of the medical testing, treatments, and procedures
you receive are of NO benefit to you—or are actually harmful—as determined by
clinical studies ???
Did
you know that:
210,000
Americans are killed by preventable hospital errors each year ???

Hi Sheena. I have heard the statistic about prescription drugs causing 231,000 deaths a year several times. At one point, I found the Journal article that declared this, but I find it harder & harder to locate the source for this number. Can you point me to the latest study that came to this conclusion?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I always find it interesting that heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases & stroke are the top 4 causes of death in the US according to the CDC. But if you add these 231,000 deaths due to prescription drugs in there, it comes in at number 3.
In my mind, this means that the top 5 causes of death in the US each year are things that could be preventable if we just took better care of ourselves.
Most people I ask think that accidents would be THE leading cause, but they come in #5 on the CDC's list at 120,859 a year. This is only 8% of the CDC's top 5 causes. The others all be health related.
I responded to the email address that Google suggested for you...I'm not sure if you got it though....
ReplyDeleteI wish I could point you to the study, Kelly! I have only read that the JAMA put that stat out, but where that came from, I don't know. And, YES, you are right about the drug issue being the #3 killer (Dr. Mercola just wrote an article involving that bit); my intuition tells me that the CDC's paid professionals would rather not tell that story in their publications. They are very medically-based, so who would want to shake the foundation by telling people it's foundation isn't so grand?
My mind and your mind seem to think similarly...yes, most people have control over what kind of life they lead, and in the end (more or less), how they will pass on (or rather, how they will not pass on)....
This was a refreshing interfacing, Kelly! Thanks for taking interest in my little 'ol blog!
